Glorietta 2 Bombing

Posted on October 21, 2007

Just yesterday as I was at school, I heard the news that a part of one of the famous malls in the country owned by the Ayala Land Corp., Glorietta 2 Mall located in the business district of the capital of the Philippines, Makati, had exploded. As of right now, I just saw the news that was given last night in lieu of the explosion, thanks to youtube.com. According to sources, it happened at around 1:40 in the afternoon just as a lot of people were eating their lunch, as well shopping because apparently, the mall was in sale that day. Reports said that the explosion came from a storage room of a certain restaurant - which I forgot the name.

Although based on what I heard, they are still not sure whether the cause of the explosion was really because of a bomb - a terrorist attack of some sort, or if it was because of an LPG tank. Also from the news, so far 8 had been found dead and 80+ are injured. Another report from the news was that the explosion may have been an inside job either from the restaurant or from the mall it self.

Of course, after the explosion, the mall was entirely closed, as well as establishments near it namely Landmark, Gold Crest, and a part of Park Square. Since Glorietta 2(G2) was the only part of the 4 parts of Glorietta that was damaged, the mall reopened today, sealing G2 out.

Luckily, Ayala Land Corp. had announced that they will take care of the fees of the injured people and will assure that they will pay for everything that it takes for these people to be cured.

And I was planning early that day to go to the said mall later that night after class. Sigh. So much for going out… I was stuck in our condo that day cause my sister wouldn’t let me out - although she wouldn’t know if I went out of anything, but since I was too lazy as well after our last class, I didn’t go anywhere, even in the nearest mall.

All I hope right now is that the government would not take this very lightly as to just an LPG tank that exploded. I really really hope that they take this very seriously and tighten ALL security everywhere, may it be malls, train stations, whatever. Although I hate bag checking securities since it gives you the hassle of opening our bag then closing it, it is really the safest way to check things. Not only that but metal detectors would still help. Lately, securities that check bags only want you to open your bag so that they can stick their sticks inside and actually say that they had checked you bag when they didn’t even look at it. :frustrated:

Sigh.. I just hope that the rumors that the US will help in investigating is true. Not only will the investigation be fast, but also for the investigation to tell the real story behind the explosion.
