New Year Summary

Busy first term, busy second term. What else is new. Hello! I’m back. Sorry for the absence. :hi:

Forgive me if I don’t know what to talk about as I had been gone from blogging for the past how many months, let alone years when I started to stop.

2012 is here, and I am still struggling here.

For those of you who do not know, I arrived in Vancouver, Canada last September 2011 for studies. It had always been my dream to go abroad and experience  a different culture and lead a different life. Different from what I have back home in the Philippines.

Everything has definitely been new to me. The weather, the people, the transit system, even the way people drive and the fact that they rarely use their horns.

Term 1 had ended last January, just the week before my birthday and so far, all I can say is I am still good and standing strong. I miss my family and friends of course, but what is a new place and a new life without new friends right? I consider my relatives and my parent’s friends here as family (direct) as they are the ones who help me through my struggles and support me if I have any questions or if I need anything. I am very thankful for that.

A Triple Celebration

January 15, 2011 No comments

Today is January 15. Yesterday was the 14th, and tomorrow is the 16th. It is a triple celebration, full of food, full of gatherings.

January 14 is my late grandfather’s birthday which, before I was in grade school, we celebrated together. January 15 is my cousin’s birthday, and January 16, it’s my turn.

Even though it was yesterday, we celebrated my grandfather’s birthday today at the cemetery. At first when they said we will attend mass at the cemetery in commemoration for his birthday, I thought it was just his immediate family. When we got there, there were tables outside and there was catering (we had a small lot but one of our neighbors was our relative so we used theirs as well). It was still relatives, but there was no one I didn’t know. (Again, we have a big family to the point that I do not know a lot of them)

Lolo's Birthday

Lolo's Birthday

He had a small cake laid out in front of his grave. It was amazing how the ants didn’t bother to touch it, even the mosquitos (note that ants could have invaded the cake as it was laid almost to the soil).

The candle was lit after the mass. My dad told my niece to blow the candle for her Lolo-lolo1 and then my sister pushed me to blow the candle for him as well. When my niece didn’t want to do it, I told her I’d count and then we’d blow it together. I was just at 2, then I saw that the fire was gone.. :|

While they were lighting the cake and my sister pushed me in to blow it in commemoration of our birthdays together, I started to tear up. I really miss him.

1Lolo is the filipino term for grandfather. As he his my lolo and she is my niece, she calls MY grandparents Lolo-lolo or Lola-lola. Lola, on the other hand, means grandmother.
